Things to Do in Daylesford: The Ultimate Local’s Guide

If you want a Melbourne getaway without hours in the car, Daylesford is hard to beat. We left the city early on a Saturday. Within ninety minutes we were sipping coffee by a lake. This is more of a locals-style guide than a highlights reel, so you will not find the mineral springs and day spas here, since that side of Daylesford deserves its own post. Instead, this guide covers the things to do in Daylesford that filled our actual day, in the order we did them. Everything below is practical info we used ourselves. That means costs, timing and a few tips we picked up along the way. Consider this the version we wish a friend had sent us before we went.

Start the Morning at Lake Daylesford

We began at Lake Daylesford, parking beside Walters Cafe in the lake carpark. The coffee here is genuinely good. It is also the kind of spot where you can watch the town wake up. Locals were out on their morning walks. A few dog walkers had already beaten us to the water.

The lake loop is an easy 2.4 kilometre walk on flat, well maintained paths. It suits most fitness levels, including prams. Parking is free, which is a nice change from a lot of regional towns. If you want to stretch your legs further, the loop connects into the wider Goldfields Track. There is an option to extend the walk if you have the time and energy for it.

This part of the morning set the tone for the whole trip. After the drive out of Melbourne, walking around a still lake in the early light was a proper reset. It is easily one of the best things to do in Daylesford if you want a slow start rather than rushing straight into town.

Visit Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm

Next we drove around fifteen minutes to Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. It is a working farm set on beautiful grounds, with a five dollar entry fee. You will find highland cows, geese, alpacas and a handful of other animals. It is a good stop if you have kids with you, though we enjoyed it just as much without any.

There is a cafe, a gift shop and a small restaurant on site. We would recommend timing your visit around lunch. That way you can try a stone baked pizza, or if you would rather keep it light, their famous lavender scones and coffee. Because it sits on a working farm, opening days can shift with the seasons. It is worth checking current hours before you drive out.

Walk to The Blowhole or Buddha Gorge

About ten minutes from town is the start of The Blowhole walk. It is a short fifteen minute stroll down to a small waterfall. If you want more of a workout, the longer loop around Buddha Gorge takes closer to forty five minutes. This is the one we chose.

The track winds through tall eucalyptus forest. We spent most of the walk convinced we were about to spot a koala. We did not, but the walk is beautiful regardless. There is plenty of shade and a genuine sense of being well outside the city. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, since parts of the track are quite uneven!

Daylesford Farmers Market on Saturdays

If your trip lines up with the fourth Saturday of the month, build your morning around the Daylesford Farmers Market. It runs at the primary school from 9am until 1pm. There are free tastings of local produce throughout. It is one of the easiest ways to support small producers while you are in town. We picked up a few things to snack on later in the day. That turned out to be handy for the picnic spot further down this list.

Lunch in the Main Town

The main strip in Daylesford has more good lunch options than you can fit into one visit. Here is what we would point you towards.

Daylesford Cheese & Wine is the perfect spot to re-wind after a day exploring Daylesford.
  • Himalaya Cafe for a pie. We had the gluten free vegan option and it did not disappoint.
  • The famous Daylesford Bakery, a local institution worth the queue.
  • The Hungry Wombat for a fresh jacket potato, with fire pits to warm up beside while you eat.
  • One of the pubs along the main strip, if you would rather sit down with a proper meal.
  • Daylesford Cheese and Wine Merchants for a wine and cheese board. The atmosphere here was buzzing and the produce selection was excellent.

Between all of these, you could easily build a second day trip around food alone.

Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens

On the way out of town, if you have time left, Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens is worth the short drive up. The views across the surrounding Victorian countryside are the kind you want to sit with for a while. There is a coffee shop at the top, plus plenty of space to park and picnic.

We sat here with the snacks we had bought from the market and let the day wind down. If you are staying later into the afternoon, this would be a genuinely lovely spot to catch the sunset before heading back to the car.

Planning to Stay Overnight

This itinerary works well as a single day trip from Melbourne. But Daylesford also makes a relaxed base for a proper weekend away, out in the quiet of the Melbourne countryside. If you would rather not rush the drive home, it is worth browsing accommodation options in Daylesford. You could also try comparing places to stay across the wider Macedon Ranges and Central Victoria region. For those who would prefer a guided day out rather than self driving, there are also small group day tours from Melbourne to Daylesford worth looking into.

Final Thoughts

A weekend in Daylesford does not need much planning to feel worthwhile. Start early, walk the lake, then work your way through the farm and the gorge. Let the town feed you for the rest of the day. We have left the mineral springs and day spas out of this one on purpose, since this is meant to read like a local’s version of the day rather than a full attraction list. Whether you treat it as a quick Melbourne getaway or stretch it into a full weekend in the Melbourne countryside, this small pocket of Victoria earns its reputation. There really are so many things to do in Daylesford that one visit is rarely enough.

If you end up building your own version of this trip, we would love to hear which stop became your favourite.
